TEHAMA COUNTY, California — Multiple people were shot and killed in a small California community Tuesday, and some of the shootings occurred at an elementary school.

At least four people and the gunman died, and the Redding Record Searchlight reports 10 others were wounded. The gunman was shot and killed by police.

The victim toll could rise, officials said Tuesday afternoon.

There were several shots fired at Rancho Tehama Elementary School, police reported.

More than 100 law enforcement officials were on the scene to investigate at least seven crime scenes as part of the shooting. Reports indicate the incident began at a home where the shooter injured a neighbor and stole a truck.

The building was evacuated and students moved to a safe location, police said. The nearby Rancho Tehama Airport was placed on lockdown.

A neighbor of the gunman, whose roommate was wounded, told local media the gunman harassed neighbors, and as of late had been shooting off bullets, according to the Record Searchlight report.

Rancho Tehama Reserve community were instructed to stay locked down until further notice. The U.S. Census says the area has just fewer than 1,500 residents, the Record Searchlight reported.

Identities of those involved and a possible motive for the shooter have not been released by authorities.

The Record Searchlight reports the school had a previous gun scare nearly two years ago. A 43-year-old woman was arrested after a call to police by a school employee because she was carrying around a sawed-off shotgun. She also had a stolen pickup truck at her home, the Record Searchlight said.
